His name could appear in medical textbooks as a famous pediatrician or surgeon; we could visit the exhibition of his drawings and portraits. But we know him as a world-class composer, conductor, teacher, and musician. We talk of Mykola Kolessa. And it is all about this latter, musical side of his personality.
Kolessa is also called the "son of the century". This is very symbolic, because he lived for 103 years, touching the beginning of the 20th and 21st centuries, and also became a living legend of our culture, one of the most outstanding Lviv residents. The history we are studying now was written during his lifetime.
At the age of 20, while studying at the Medical University of Krakow, Mykola decides to change his field of activity, takes the full responsibility for his future, and goes to Prague, where he graduates from the Faculty of Philosophy of Charles University and at the same time from the Prague Conservatory.
And there was also a passion for drawing. As Kolessa himself recalled:
"Often, during lectures, I drew portraits from memory. I still have a notebook where the faces of my favorite professors are drawn". However, the artist Petro Kholodnyi talked the boy off from his future career as an artist. He advised him to do music after all.
And he was not mistaken. Music became the main goal of his life, a life calling.
Kolessa’s special musical "trick" was the use of national Ukrainian motifs from the very west. As Kolessa was from Galicia, of course, so such elements of ethnicity were close to him. He expressed his talents not only on a sheet of music score, but also with a conductor's baton in his hands, and in the role of a teacher of the Lviv School of Composers, which was founded by Kolessa himself together with the composer Lyudkevych.

Його імʼя ми могли б побачити у підручниках з медицини, як відомого педіатра чи хірурга; могли б відвідати виставку його графік й портретів. Але ми знаємо його як композитора, дириґента, педагога, музиканта світового рівня. Він - Микола Колесса. І саме про цю останню, музичну, сторону його особистості ми поговоримо сьогодні.
Колессу називають також «сином століття». Це дуже символічно, адже він прожив цілих 103 роки, зачепивши початок ХХ та ХХІ століття, а також став живою легендою нашої культури, одним із найвидатніших львів’ян. За його життя і писалась та історія, яку ми зараз вивчаємо.
У віці 20-ти років, навчаючись у медичному університеті Кракова, Микола вирішує змінити сферу своєї діяльності, бере відповідальність перед батьками за своє майбутнє, і їде до Праги, де закінчує філософський факультет Карлового університету та одночасно Празьку консерваторію.
А ще було захоплення малюванням. Як згадує сам Колесса:
“Часто на лекціях я займався тим, що з пам’яті малював портрети. Дотепер маю зшиток, де намальовані обличчя моїх улюблених професорів”. Утім, відмовив хлопця від майбутньої кар’єри художника не хто інший, як митець Петро Холодний. Порадив займатися все таки музикою.
І не помилився. Бо ж музика і стала головною стихією, життєвим покликанням.
Його особливою музичною «фішкою» стало використання національних мотивів із заходу України. Родом Колесса з Галичини, як не як, тому такі елементи етнічності були для нього близькими. Свої таланти проявляв не лише на аркуші нотного зошита, але й з дириґентською паличкою в руках, і в ролі викладача Львівської композиторської школи, що заснована самим Колессою разом із композитором Людкевичем.
