In loving memory of remarkable people, bright music is born. Music as a recollection, music as a dedication, music as a memory – all this well describes "Elegia Hrebenica" for organ and strings by Zoltan Almashi. The renowned Ukrainian composer created this piece upon the creative request of the Lviv Organ Hall in 2020. The premiere took place in December of the same year as part of the "Triangle" project, symbolizing the three essential elements without which music does not exist fully – the composer, the performer, and the listener. Alongside Almashi's work, new pieces by Viktor Kaminskyi and Oleh Bezborodko also we performed in the concert "Organ Premieres."

Zoltan Almashi dedicated this music to the memory of his father, the wonderful person and musician, the well-known Lviv violinist Gabor Almashi. But why "Elegia Hrebenica"? The composer explained why the name of the piece includes the village of Hrebeniv: "... in my childhood, I often passed by Hrebeniv on the way to Transcarpathia, where I spent my summers at my grandmother's. However, I actually visited Hrebeniv itself for the first time in 2020, together with my father. And it turned out to be the last time. It was in Hrebeniv where I felt a very close connection with my father. It was there that we last went mushrooming together. So, this composition, dedicated to the memory of my father, got the name 'Elegia Hrebenica.' The name of the village Hrebeniv touches my soul with pain!"

Feelings of extraordinary love, gratitude, nostalgia, and a bright sorrow are experienced by the listeners of "Elegia Hrebenica". The story of the last memorable moments with the dearest person is narrated by the composer through diverse musical means. The timbre of the organ is like a semi-transparent mist of memories, simultaneously symbolizing a higher world, perfect in its eternity. The improvisational violin solo with barely perceptible Hungarian intonations serves as an image of the father, a violinist, speaking deeply and touching the heart. There is also an image of the composer-son: in the final part, a virtuoso monologue of the cello appears (played by Zoltan Almashi himself on this instrument). His emotional address becomes a farewell. Musicologist Liliya Shevchuk-Nazar aptly compared this dialogue to the masterful middle part of Mozart's clarinet concerto, where the son converses with his father's violin. In Almashi's piece, the cello theme is picked up by ascending violin arpeggios, as if the father's soul is ascending to the sky on stairs.

"Elegia Hrebenica" is moving and enchanting with its sincerity from the first bars. The composer opens his soul to us, and to remain indifferent is simply impossible. Music as a recollection, music as a dedication, music as a memory – its beautiful sounds are engraved in the heart forever.

На світлу памʼять світлих людей народжується світла музика. Музика-спогад, музика-присвята, музика-памʼять – усе це про твір “Elegia Hrebenica” для органа та струнних Золтана Алмаші. Відомий український композитор написав твір на замовлення Львівського органного залу у 2020 році. Премʼєра відбулася у грудні того ж року в рамках проєкту “Triangle”, назва якого символізує три ланки, без яких музика не існує повноцінно – композитор, виконавець і слухач. Тоді в концерті “Органні премʼєри” поруч з твором Алмаші прозвучали також нові композиції Віктора Камінського та Олега Безбородька.

Золтан Алмаші присвятив твір памʼяті свого батька, чудової людини та музиканта, знаного львівського скрипаля Габора Алмаші. Але чому саме “Elegia Hrebenica”? Композитор розказав, чому в назві твору зʼявилося львівське селище Гребенів: “... в дитинстві я безліч раз їхав повз Гребенів по дорозі на Закарпаття, де відпочивав влітку у бабці. Але власне у самому Гребенові вперше побував тільки в 2020 році, разом з батьками. І вийшло так, що востаннє. Моє тісне спілкування з батьком було саме в Гребенові. Саме там ми востаннє з татом ходили по гриби. І тому цей твір, присвячений памʼяті батька, отримав назву “Elegia Hrebenica”. Назва селища Гребенів віддає болем у моїй душі!”. 

Почуття надзвичайної любові, вдячності, ностальгії, світлого смутку переживають і слухачі, які чують “Elegia Hrebenica”. Історію про останні памʼятні моменти поруч з найріднішою людиною композитор розповідає завдяки різноманітним музичним засобам. Тембр органу – це напівпрозора димка спогадів, що водночас, символізує вищий світ, досконалий у своїй вічності. Імпровізаційне скрипкове соло з ледь вловимими угорськими інтонаціями як образ батька-скрипаля промовляє глибоко, торкаючись самого серця. Є в елегії і образ композитора-сина: у заключній частині зʼявляється віртуозний монолог віолончелі (саме на цьому інструменті грає Золтан Алмаші). Його емоційне звертання стає прощанням. Музикознавиця Лілія Шевчук-Назар слушно порівняла цей діалог з шедевральною середньою частиною кларнетового концерту Моцарта, де син веде розмову з батьковою скрипкою. У Алмаші тему віолончелі підхоплює висхідне скрипкове арпеджіо, ніби це сходами у небо піднімається батькова душа. 

“Elegia Hrebenica” зворушує та зачаровує своєю щирістю з перших тактів. Композитор відкриває перед нами свою душу, і залишитись байдужими просто неможливо. Музика-спогад, музика-присвята, музика-памʼять – її прекрасні звуки закарбовуються в серці назавжди.
