From the 16th century to the present day, the genre of the instrumental concert has undergone an incredible evolution and transformation. The word “concertare” translates from Latin as "to compete", and the genre is built precisely on the principle of competition, the opposition of a solo part to an orchestral tutti. However, this interaction between the orchestra and the soloist is inverted by composers in a variety of ways: it can be not only rivalry but also, a dialogue, confrontation or mutual reinforcement, a moment of competition in performance skills, or absolute unity subordinated to a musical idea.

The Concerto for flute and chamber orchestra "In memory of my father" (2013) by Oleh Bezborodko has different moods, shades, and images. The composer defined the features of each part by specifying their names. The first part Allegro fresco (Quick, fresh) is colorful and eclectic. The flute part, indeed, is fresh and unusual: its sound sometimes imitates the timbres of the oboe and clarinet; in long phrases, wide vibrato and recitative episodes, the sound of the flute resembles a male voice. The lyrical second part Adagio di molto con devozione (Very slowly, with devotion), on the contrary, demonstrates perfect musical simplicity, an asceticism that fascinates from the first seconds. The third movement Allegro desolato (Fast, desolate) is a reminiscence of the first movement - its characteristic rhythm is now emphatically adopted by the solo flute.

As part of the release in the Ukrainian Live project, you have the opportunity to hear the recording of the premiere performance of the Concert, which took place on the stage of the Column Hall of the National Philharmonic of Ukraine within the XXIII International Festival "Music Premieres of the Season" (2013). Since 1989, the festival has been held under the auspices of the Kyiv organization of the National Union of Composers of Ukraine. The newest music by Ukrainian composers is traditionally performed by the best musicians. Oleh Bezborodko wrote his Flute Concerto specifically for flutist Serhiy Vilka, who became its first performer.
