Suite No. 2 for strings by Dmytro Klebanov is a small masterpiece of Ukrainian music of the twentieth century.

Extraordinary melodic, full of sincere folklore, has elements of the avant-garde that make the musical story non-trivial and unpredictable, this music can surprise you from the first minutes. Kharkiv composer Dmytro Klebanov was an unsurpassed master of orchestration and intonation. His skills in working with the toning of instruments amazed his contemporaries, and the composer tried to pass this skill to his students.

In Suite No. 2, the strings create an incredibly rich texture due to the variety of strokes, virtuoso tempo, and colorful ensemble.

The Suite contains five parts, each of which lasts no more than 2-3 minutes.

The first part, Prelude, begins with a cheerful folk motif, which in the first 30 seconds, thanks to dissonances and atypical moves, makes us understand that it is not a banal stylization of a folk piece, but something more. The side theme in the second part of the Prelude, which the composer develops with the help of seconds, reminds us of the imperfection of the modern world and the search for primordial harmony. However, as befits a good story, the Prelude ends with the victory of the main life-affirming theme.

The second part is slow and measured, called Nocturne. However, this is not a typical "evening song". The main theme resembles a chant of a folk duma, repeated in the lower registers, it acquires solidity and strength, around it, as around a Cossack, maiden hands curl - the theme of the first violins move. A slight pinch and a feeling of anxiety do not leave us throughout the Nocturne. As if confirming our guesses, the Nocturne ends with an unexpected chord, repeated twice, which breaks this song like an unexpected separation.

The third part, the Fugue, which follows the measured Nocturne, works beautifully on the contrast of feelings and tempos. The light kolomyika theme is repeated several times in different voices before merging into an intricate weave. The composer managed to create an extravaganza and convey the whirlwind of folk dance in a minute and a half while using a complex and intricate rhythmic pattern.

The fourth part is called "Blizzard". And from the first seconds of the music, a picture of merry holidays appears before us: snow flies, cheerful people gathered at the fair, bright maiden shawls, red boots, cheerful smiles, shining eyes - everything creates an amazing bright picture.
In the middle, the disturbing motif from the first part appears, with long sighs of violins and violas, but the snow whirlwind sweeps it away. The variety of strokes used by Klebanov, the fast tempo, and the texture of the theme make this the most virtuosic of the whole suite.

The fifth and final part is again a fugue, but unlike the fugue in the third part, it is more measured and calm, it is not a "run", but a walk.

The theme is repeated three times in different registers, first to give way to a side theme, and then returns, but with the same avant-garde notes. The suite ends with a gradual fading of the theme as if we are moving away from the picture of celebration.

According to critic Irma Zolotovytska, "the extreme saturation of the musical fabric with "singing" voices created the laconicism of the form, its compression in time. The brightness and depth of expression with logically measured clarity and conciseness of the form, emotional immediacy and capacity of thought - all this attracts in the music of the Second Suite".

Ukrainian Live Classic.
