The depth of meaning, the mystical timbre of the organ, the sense of instability, concealment, and fragility converge in the work "The Power of the Powerless" by the contemporary Lviv composer Ostap Manulyak. This is music on the edge of time, the leading idea of which is extremely relevant for Ukrainians who are currently defending truth and justice: on the battlefield, on diplomatic arenas, in the spheres of history, culture, and art.

The piece was created in 2022 and is part of a cycle of works for various wind instruments that Ostap Manulyak has been working on since 2019. The title "The Power of the Powerless" is borrowed from a political essay of the same name written in 1978 (the original title in Czech is "Moc bezmocných"). This is one of the most famous literary works by the Czech writer, playwright, and political figure Václav Havel (1936-2011). The last president of Czechoslovakia and the first democratic president of independent Czechia, Havel, underwent a difficult path of dissent, criticism of the communist regime, the struggle for the rights of political prisoners, and even his own imprisonment. The essay "The Power of the Powerless" is dedicated to analyzing how the totalitarian communist system functions, the general idea of which is the introduction of total "life in falsehood."

Ostap Manulyak explains: "The most threatening force for such a regime is the force of Truth - when people are not afraid to openly say that 'black is black' and 'white is white'. And often the action of one ignites many. In 2022, this idea and this title acquired an absolutely new dimension for us. Just as the entire Soviet system turned out to be a colossus on clay feet, which fell under the pressure of people fighting for truth, today we see how Ukrainian society is fighting for freedom and independence, and the russian aggressor is turning from a global superpower into a pack of worthless Morlocks, who perish and flee from the light of truth and freedom, which unites more and more people."

The premiere of the work took place at a concert as part of the Organ Festival in Lviv "Music and War" in December 2022 performed by organist Nataliya Lendyel from Uzhgorod. Shortly thereafter, a recording was made at a repeat concert, which we are happy to share with the listeners of the Ukrainian Live Classic mobile app.

Глибина сенсів, містичний тембр органу, відчуття нестабільності, прихованості і крихкості поєдналися у творі “Сила безсилих” сучасного львівського композитора Остапа Мануляка. Це музика на вістрі часу, провідна ідея якої надзвичайно актуальна для українців, які просто зараз відстоюють правду і справедливість: на полі бою, на дипломатичних аренах, у сферах історії, культури та мистецтва.

Композиція створена 2022 року і пов'язана з циклом творів для різних духових інструментів, над якими Остап Мануляк працював з 2019 року.  Назва “Сила Безсилих” запозичена з однойменного політичного есе, написаного 1978 року (оригінальна назва чеською “Moc bezmocných”). Це один з найвідоміших літературних творів чеського письменника, драматурга і політичного діяча Вацлава Гавела (1936-2011). Останній президент Чехословаччини і перший демократичний президент незалежної Чехії Гавел пройшов нелегкий шлях дисидентства, критики комуністичного режиму, боротьби за права політвʼязнів і навіть власного увʼязнення. Есе “Сила безсилих” присвячене аналізу того, як функціонує тоталітарна комуністична система, загальна ідея якої – це запровадження тотального "життя в брехні".

Остап Мануляк розтлумачує: “Найбільш загрозливою для такого режиму є сила Правди – коли люди не бояться відкрито казати на чорне "чорне" а на біле "біле".  І часто така дія одного запалює багатьох. У 2022 році ця ідея і ця назва отримала для нас абсолютно новий вимір. Подібно як уся радянська система виявилась колосом на глиняних ногах, який впав під натиском людей, що боролись за правду, так і сьогодні ми бачимо, як українське суспільство виборює свободу і незалежність, а російський агресор перетворюється із глобальної суперсили на зграю нікчемних варварів-морлоків, що гинуть і тікають від світла правди і свободи, яка об'єднує щораз більше людей.”

Премʼєра твору відбулася на концерті в рамках Органного фестивалю у Львові “Музика і війна” в грудні 2022 року у виконанні органістки з Ужгорода Наталії Лендєл. Трохи згодом на повторному концерті було здійснено запис, яким ми радо ділимося зі слухачами мобільного додатку Ukrainian Live Classic.
