“Blessing of Sorrow” is the title of Symphony II (2002) by the Ukrainian contemporary composer Boryslav Stronko, the first release of which will be presented this week on Ukrainian Live.
The Symphony skillfully combines classic and romantic roots, music of Eastern and Caucasian cultures, philosophical and avant-garde ideas, and even electronic music elements.
Why such imagery, why the name "Blessing of Sorrow"? This is probably a deeply Slavic emotion, such a lyrical attitude to the world, contemplative, comprehension of Ukrainian tragic history, and in some ways  a  slightly  dusky  landscape…
The composer admits that his Second Symphony comes either from an elusive idea or from improvisation. In fact, the symphony "grows" from the oboe's melody -an echo of memories from his childhood.

The boy, who grew up in Armenia and then in Azerbaijan, constantly heard mysterious melodies on the street, "music soaring in the air for a long time." And his improvisational symphony is distinguished by its mystery, meditativeness, originality of form, and its own sound.

The musical language was also influenced by Stronko's fascination with Indian music, especially the genre of raga -modal improvisational music, performed for a prolonged time. Consequently, Symphony II is a colorful and original musical combination that has no analogs, because it is impossible to attribute it to a particular musical style.

The composer himself describes this approach as the creation of "virtual styles", i.e. those that do not exist or that could hypothetically exist under certain historical  and  cultural  conditions.
As for the form of the symphony - it is in three parts, and there is a reprise. But I wanted to rethink the very principle of repetition. The replay is not a repetition, it is a return to the ascending point from which the other road starts. That is, reprise as an alternative - what other direction could be taken from the beginning.
From today's perspective, the Symphony "Blessing of Sorrow" is the music of self-immersion, comprehension, return to the origins and memories. The sad, devastated, melancholy nature of music resonates with the sorrow and sadness that every Ukrainian felt during the war. But this sorrow is truly "blessed" because it gives us a sense that we are alive, we have hope and strength to win.
